Courses and workshops


 

Bonsai course for beginners on October 28 and November 4, 2024

This theoretical course, offered in English, will cover bonsai fundamentals which include a portion on traditional Japanese design and a portion on the horticultural aspects in our climate. On completion of this course, participants will have the essential knowledge required to begin to develop bonsai for our climate zone.  Lecture notes will be provided.  Cost of this course is set at $25 per person for OBS members and $40 for non-members, to be paid upon registration.

  • Monday October 28, from 6:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.: Aesthetics of the Japanese approach.
  • Monday November 4, from 6:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.: Horticulture and techniques.

Location:  ‘’Cabane en bois rond’’ located at 331 Cité des jeunes in Gatineau

Styling and Wiring workshop (spring 2025 date to be determined) 

In this workshop, participants will perform the analysis of their trees following a presentation on the principles of bonsai aesthetics. A design will then be determined for each tree. There will be a short presentation on how to wire primary and secondary branches after which the participants will start implementing the chosen design.

There is a limit of 8 participants and the cost is $50 per person to be paid upon registration.

Open workshop on May 20th  2025  

Members bring their own tree or trees to work on with the help of an experienced member.  Participants can get help in performing repot, wiring or styling, or simply receive advice. There is no need to register in advance to participate in those workshops and there is no cost for members.

Location:  Ron Kolbus Lakeside Centre, 102 Greenview Avenue in Britannia Park 

REGISTRATION:  not required

PAYMENT: free activity


Bonsai development workshop (spring 2025 date to be determined)   

During the workshop, participants will receive assistance from experienced OBS members to begin developing their own bonsai using a pre-bonsai plant. The plant material, a suitable pot, the tools and the necessary supplies will be provided.
