All courses and workshop are held at the Ron Kolbus Lakeside Centre


Bonsai course for beginners on October 30th and November 1st, 2017

This theoretical course will cover bonsai fundamentals which include a portion on traditional Japanese design and a portion on the horticultural aspects in our climate. On completion of this course, participants will have the essential knowledge required to begin to develop bonsai for our climate zone.  Lecture notes will be provided.  Cost of this course is set at $20 per person for OBS members and $35 for non-members, to be paid at the start of the course.

  1. Monday October 30, from 6:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. :  Esthetic of the Japanese approach.
  2. Wednesday November 1st, from 6:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. : Horticulture and techniques.

Wiring course/workshop on April 3 and 4, 2017     

The course, offered in English this year, is limited to 6 participants.  It will cover the theory and practice of wiring techniques, as well as a method of forming foliage pads. The cost is $20 per participant. The course is given over two evenings:

  1. Monday April 3, from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. will be on the theory behind the cleanup of foliage, the technique of wiring and the technique of shaping foliage pads
  2. Tuesday April 4, from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. will be in the form of a workshop during which participants will practice those techniques on provided material.

Advanced Juniper course/workshop on April 10, 24 and 25, 2017

This in depth course will be offered in English and is intended for intermediate level bonsai enthusiasts.  It will cover the horticultural techniques required for Junipers.  The course will be limited to 8 participants and will comprise both theory and practice. We will also have room for 5 observers. The cost will be $25 per participant and $10 for observers. Participants will have to provide their own tree.

The course and workshops will be spread over 3 evenings:

  1. Monday April 10, from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.: theory only;
  2. Monday April 24 from 6:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.:  theory then workshop;
  3. Tuesday April 25, from 6:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.: theory then workshop.

Open workshop(s); dates to be announced later.

Those bilingual workshops are held at the Ron Kolbus Lakeside Centre. Members bring their own tree or trees to work on with the help of an experienced member.  Participants can get help in performing repot, wiring or styling, or simply receive advice. There is no need to register in advance to participate in those workshops and there is no cost for members.
